Our Mission
We strive to provide high-quality haskap berries for our community, visitors, friends and family alike.
Our Story
Our haskap journey began back in 2007, while looking to add some edible landscaping to our recently developed yard. Growing up on different farms our families had always taken great pride in planting large vegetable gardens each summer along with various fruits and fruit trees planted throughout the yards. Looking to make the most of our limited growing season and viable options which can survive the winters of the Canadian Prairies we were always looking for new additions.
We ended up at the local greenhouse one spring weekend and after wondering up, down and around the facilities ended up leaving that day with a few black raspberries shoots and (3) small haskap plants. To this day still do not recall the exact varieties, only that we had purchase (3) different varieties for cross pollination and planted them in our front yard together as a small hedge accent. They grew quite well as a small shrub hedge bush, but we had not put much thought or time into them over the years as they only produced very small, sour berries. Only later on would we come to learn they must of been of Russian lineage and that much larger and better tasting varieties existed. The true beginning of our haskap journey and interest came years later on while visiting a relative in Edmonton who happened to have several beautifully and well manicured round haskap shrubs thriving in his back yard in the city. The haskap plants here were the newer University of Saskatchewan (U of S) cultivars with much larger berries and incredible taste, something unique, it was similar to a blue berry but different, unique in both shape and taste, from that day forward with sampling these beautiful and delicious blue, berries first hand was instantly hooked and re-engaged. Next up was to find out why we didn’t already know more about these; more importantly, what, and where could we find these.
After more years of countless google searches, reading and research including attending Dr. Bob Bors Haskap School Days at the U of S. Attending Haskap School one summer was an incredible help, being able to not only listen and learn but to see and taste the different cultivars firsthand in the University’s orchard. We followed through with more years of researching, planning, and saving looking for the confidence and right timing, we finally took the leap forward and planted three thousand haskap plants in 2022.
We selected the most recent late season varieties from the U of S, Boreal Beauty, Beast and Blizzard as were said to produce some of the largest and best tasting varieties. Unfortunately for us it ended up being one of the hottest, driest summers we had noted in recent years so became a challenge keeping the three thousand young plants alive during their first summer in the ground. Luckily for us the hard work and countless hours paid off.
In 2023 our orchard continued to grow and establish with focus on vegetation management, establishing our orchard rows and watering the young plants. Finally, many years after our first very first haskap purchase back in 2007, in 2024 we were pleasantly surprised to see a substantial number of blooms in the orchard, which slowly turned into our first fresh fruit harvest for all (3) varieties. Now in 2025 we are anticipating an even bigger harvest and our hoping to share our orchard with the public for the first time as we look to open our U-Pick for the summer of 2025.
